Joseph Yang is a Founding Partner of PatentEsque Law Group, LLP where he specializes in technology transactions, patent licensing and intellectual property strategy. He previously served as VP & General Counsel of Cryptography Research, Inc. until its acqusition by Rambus Inc. in 2011.
Joe has been lead counsel on hundreds of deals involving billions of dollars in value – across the computer, electronics, semiconductor, internet, manufacturing and healthcare industries. He has also served as an arbitrator, overseen complex patent litigation, and led the development of worldwide corporate patent portfolios.
Joe has deep experience in structuring, negotiating and implementing patent licensing & sale, technology transfer, strategic alliance, joint venture, energy, and e-commerce agreements, as well as IP aspects of mergers and acquisitions. He frequently advises clients on IP strategy, including structuring IP to maintain a competitive advantage, and IP monetization.
Before joining PatentEsque Law Group, Joe co-founded and later led the IP transactions practice at the Palo Alto office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, one of the world's preeminent corporate law firms with offices throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Joe advised the firm's worldwide clients in all types of transactions, including serving as lead or co-lead IP counsel for over one hundred technology sector mergers and acquisitions, including HP-Compaq, Yahoo-Inktomi, Quantum-Certance, and many others.

He has also taught the "Patent Law and Policy" course at U.C. Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of Law as an adjunct professor.
Joe is recognized as "One of the World's Leading IP Strategists," as well as "One of the World's Leading IP and Technology Licensing Practitioners," by Intellectual Asset Magazine. He is also listed in Marquis Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World.
Joe is a member of the California Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Before becoming an attorney, Joe was a research engineer in the aerospace/defense (TRW Corporation) and energy (Shell Research) industries.
Joe holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and a Ph.D. in engineering from the California Institute of Technology. He has recently served on the Board of Directors of the Caltech Alumni Association, and as President of its San Francisco Chapter.
